| Name | Definition |
|---|---|
| Apparition | Simply, a spirit or ghost that you can see. See Also: Non-vaporous Apparition, Vaporous Apparition |
| Battery Drain | Battery drain refers to a sudden and unexplained draining of the power from battery sources in an area of paranormal activity, sometimes followed closely by the return of that power to the battery. It is believed that spirits, existing without physical form, must borrow energy from somewhere in order to manifest. This can explain such things as electromagnetic spikes, cold spots, and battery drain. See Also: cold spots, electromagnetic fields |
| Cold Spot | A location where two separate temperatures can be recorded within a short distance from each other. This is believed to be caused by a spirit attempting to manifest by drawing energy from the surrounding area. See Also: Battery Drain |
| Demonic Spirit | Unlike "ghosts" or "spirits" in the traditional sense, a demonic spirit never existed as a person. Demonic spirits are entities we commonly know as demons. See Also: Ghost, Spirit | Also known as: Demon |
| Disembodied Voices | Disembodies voices are sounds and/or voices that are heard without any apparent source. Unlike EVP, disembodied voices can be heard by the human ear without the assistance of recording devices. See Also: EVP, Electronic Voice Phenomenon |
| Electromagnetic Field Poisoning | Prolonged exposure to high EMF can cause some of the experiences listed by people complaining of hauntings. Some possible symptoms include, paranoia (feeling of being watched), irritability, sense of dread, and in some cases skin irritation. See Also: Fear Cage | Also known as: EMF poisoning |
| Electromagnetic Fields | Electromagnetic fields surround electrically charged objects. It is believed that a spirit attempting to manifest itself will draw power from surrounding areas. If an EMF spike is detected and there is no source for it, it is believed that this could be a spirit attempting to manifest itself. Also known as: EMF |
| Electronic Voice Phenomenon | Electronic Voice Phenomenon refers to disembodied voices or sounds captured on analog or, more prevalently used today, digital recording devices. These voices and/or sounds are not heard by the human ear (those heard by the human ear are known as disembodied voices). See Also: disembodied voices | Also known as: EVP |
| Fear Cage | While I have only ever heard this term used by Jason and Grant of TAPS (Ghost Hunters on SciFi) I find the term useful enough to include here. A fear cage is a setup that has a person completely closed in on all sides by object emitting high EMF. See Also: EMF Poisoning |
| Imprint | See Residual Haunting. Also known as: Residual Haunting |
| Non-vaporous Apparition | A solid apparition. Sometimes mistaken for an actual person until it disappears or behaves in a way that a normal person could not (walking through walls for instance.) See Also: Vaporous Apparition, Apparition |
| Orb | This term is used to describe a wide range of phenomena. An orb can be round, diamond-shaped, a smear, cigar-shaped, and many other shapes. It can leave a trail behind it (sometimes referred to as a string of pearls) or not. It is believed to be a physical representation of spirit energy. However it is also one of the most over-used paranormal terms, as dust particles and insects can give a distinct impression of orb-like activity. |
| Percipient | Denotes the person who has had the paranormal experience. |
| Residual Haunting | This term refers to an apparition that is simply repeating an event from the past without any intelligent interaction with the present. Examples of this include 'The Flying Dutchman', a ghost ship that is seen usually from afar and usually preceding a maritime disaster. Also known as: Imprint |
| Vaporous Apparition | A non-solid apparition. Generally can be seen through or appears to change shape as it moved. See Also: Non-vaporous Apparition, Apparition |
